It’s one of those questions that sounds simple until you actually start thinking about it. You notice your neighbor has gutters across the front and back but nothing on the sides. Or you’re planning a new roof and wondering whether gutters on three sides are really earning their keep. Or you’ve got a quote that includes gutters you’re not sure you need.
Here’s the honest answer: not every side of every house needs gutters—but in the Pacific Northwest, more sides usually do than most homeowners expect. And the places where gutters are missing are often the most expensive mistakes to fix later.
Quick Answer: You don’t need gutters on every side of your house—you need them wherever a roof slope drains water toward the ground near your foundation. For most Pacific Northwest homes, that means the front and back at minimum, and often the sides as well. Complex rooflines, Tacoma’s above-average rainfall, and the region’s sustained wet season mean more sides typically need gutters here than in drier parts of the country.
What It Costs to Skip Gutters vs. Install Them
This comparison is worth putting up front—because it reframes the decision entirely.

The Primary Rule: Follow the Slopes
The most reliable way to determine where gutters are needed is to follow your roof’s drainage pattern. Wherever a slope terminates at an eave, that’s where water exits the roof—and that’s where a gutter belongs.
Gable Roofs: Front and Back
A standard gable roof drains toward the front and back eaves. Those two sides almost always need gutters. The triangular gable ends on the sides are vertical walls—they don’t shed water and don’t need gutters.
The exception: if your gable roof has a dormer, side extension, or lower roofline connecting to a garage or addition, water from those elements may drain toward a side of the house. A gutter is needed wherever that drainage occurs.
Hip Roofs: All Four Sides
A hip roof slopes on all four sides toward every exterior wall. Hip-roofed homes typically need gutters on all four sides—and this is one of the most common sources of missing gutter coverage we find during inspections.
Complex Rooflines: Where the Gaps Get Costly
Valleys—the V-shaped channels where two slopes meet—concentrate water dramatically before it reaches the eave. A valley draining into an area with no gutter, or an undersized one, is a significant failure point. Dormers produce their own drainage. Lower rooflines on additions and garages often drain toward walls that weren’t part of the original drainage design. These are frequently the spots where foundation or siding damage has already begun when we arrive.
A Note on Drip Edges
Every gutter system works in conjunction with the drip edge—the metal flashing strip at the roof’s edge that directs water into the gutter rather than behind it. A gutter installed without a proper drip edge relationship can still allow water to infiltrate the fascia board. When gutters are installed or replaced, confirming the drip edge is properly positioned is part of a complete installation.
How Tacoma’s Rainfall Changes the Equation
The standard advice about gutter placement was developed for average rainfall conditions. Tacoma is not average.
According to NOAA, Tacoma averages more than 37 inches of rainfall annually—most of it concentrated in the October-through-May wet season. Your gutters aren’t managing occasional storms. They’re managing continuous, sustained roof drainage for six to eight months of the year.
In arid climates, a homeowner might reasonably skip gutters on a dormer or side extension. In Tacoma, any unmanaged drainage point compounds over months, not just during individual storm events. If you’re on the fence about whether a particular eave edge needs a gutter, the Pacific Northwest rainfall reality almost always tips the decision toward installation.
When You Might Not Need Gutters on a Particular Side
Honest guidance includes acknowledging genuine exceptions.
True gable ends—the triangular vertical walls under a roof peak—don’t shed water and don’t need gutters. This is the most common situation where a homeowner correctly has no gutter on a side of their home.
Very large roof overhangs (12 inches or more) project water significantly farther from the foundation. On a side where no slope terminates and the overhang is deep, gutters may not be strictly necessary—particularly if the ground slopes away from the foundation there.
Natural grade sloping away from the foundation on a specific side can reduce the need for a gutter on that side, especially on hillside properties.
The Pacific Northwest caveat: Even these exceptions are narrower here than in drier climates. A side that might safely go without a gutter in Arizona may still develop moisture problems in Tacoma simply due to the volume and duration of rainfall. When in doubt, a professional assessment during an actual rainstorm is more reliable than any general rule.
Gutter Sizing and Downspout Placement
Even correctly placed gutters fail if they’re undersized or if downspouts discharge too close to the foundation.
5-inch K-style gutters work well for smaller roof slopes, secondary eaves, and sections with light canopy cover. 6-inch K-style gutters are the better choice for valley drainage points, large roof slopes, or homes with significant tree coverage. Most Pacific Northwest homes benefit from 6-inch gutters on primary eave sections—getting sizing right at installation is far cheaper than replacing undersized gutters after damage accumulates.
For downspouts: one per 30–40 linear feet of gutter, discharging at least 6 feet from the foundation via extension or underground drain. A downspout terminating at the foundation edge during a dry summer is a foundation moisture problem during a wet winter.
Alternatives Worth Knowing About
On sides where gutters may not be strictly necessary, alternatives include:
- Proper grading: Soil sloping away from the foundation at 6 inches over 10 feet moves surface water away naturally—the most fundamental drainage tool available
- French drains: Perforated pipes in gravel trenches that intercept and redirect groundwater near the foundation
- Extended downspout drains: Underground pipes that carry existing downspout discharge farther from the home
In the Pacific Northwest, these work best as supplements to a gutter system rather than replacements. The sustained rainfall volume typically exceeds what grading and landscaping alone can reliably manage.
Signs You Have a Coverage Problem
Outside: Erosion trenches under the roofline—splash-back staining on siding—fascia water marks or damage—ground that stays wet near the foundation after rain—moss or algae growing on siding at the foundation line
Inside: Basement or crawl space moisture that worsens after rain—musty odors in lower levels—efflorescence (white mineral deposits) on foundation walls
In the gutters: Overflow during normal rainfall (undersized or insufficient downspouts)—gutters pulling away from the fascia (weight from overflow or ice)
The Pacific Northwest Tree Factor
Most Tacoma and South Sound homes have Douglas firs, cedars, or deciduous trees nearby—and that changes the maintenance equation. Conifer needles fall year-round, not just in autumn. A gutter that needs cleaning twice a year in an open yard may need it three or four times under significant canopy.
For homes with heavy conifer coverage, mid-range to premium mesh gutter guards often pay for themselves in reduced cleaning and prevented overflow damage. Cheap plastic screen varieties allow needle accumulation and typically aren’t worth installing.

Every house is different. The right coverage for a simple gable-roofed bungalow in a low-tree neighborhood is different from what a complex hip-roofed home with dormers and established Douglas firs needs.
