In Olympia in the 1950s, young Kenny Slater was the worker of the neighborhood. Starting at age eight he became the “go-to-kid” for jobs up and down the block. Ken was one of nine kids, after a long shift at her job his mother would always say, “We don’t ‘have to work,’ we get to work.”
As he grew older, “Kenny Kid” picked up some construction skills from his stepdad and uncles to accompany his work ethic. His high school counselor hired him to help with roofing jobs, and by the time he was a sophomore, he was supervising roofing crews in the afternoons after early dismissal!
On another rainy day in downtown Olympia, the local Spar restaurant listened to the familiar drip of the unfixed leak in the roof. Ken had taken up some extra work as a busboy in the evenings and the owner, Mac, asked him if he could do something about it. Ken grabbed his tools, scurried up on the roof, and proceeded to patch it right up. Mac was amazed.
“Kenny, you doctored my roof! You’re a roof doctor!” he exclaimed. There in the heart of Thurston County, a legend was born!
What began as a hard-working high-school kid’s side hustle has grown into Western Washington’s most trusted roofing company, with offices in seven cities. The Roof Doctor’s generations of experience, unmatched expertise, and commitment to providing superior value and service have kept us on top for over sixty years.
Today the Roof Doctor is owned and operated by the next generation of the Slater family. Tara, Briana, Shane, and Ken Jr. grew up riding along in Dad’s work truck, picking up supplies at the shop, and climbing up on roofs during Go To Work With Dad Day. After college, all four eventually found their way back home to The Roof Doctor to carry on the family legacy.
